The nycklharopa sounds like a type of hurdy gurdy. These instruments were quite popular in early western art music and fell out of favor with the standardization of instruments and instrumentation. Musicians were far more creative with the instrum...

Absolutely will do! I wasn't able to get last night off work due to the fact that I hadn't planned Mondays off ahead of time. don't expect me to be a stranger though! I'll definitely be popping in this coming week (providing the flight I'm catching back to Minneapolis that morning isn't canceled).

Oh yeah, of course! Would it be kosher for me to stop in at least? Your Jazz ensemble is such a positive community, I was really kicking myself for burning that bridge, and almost even before it had been built. I'm really in a much better place with my life now than I was. I would definitely be interested in making a serious commitment to the group.

I might be travelling around a little, this semester, but that'll mostly be on weekends and such. I feel I can safely tell you that I'm willing to make a commitment to a full semester of jazz band if you'd accept my presence. Rehearsal is on... Thursdays?

Actually I just got back from up north, I was working as a counselor all summer, guiding trips to the mountains and such. This year I'm living over near the U of M in a house with a number of other musicians, we'll be forming a recording label if all goes well. Actually, with all the other music that's been going on in my life, I don't get the chance to pick up the sax as much as I'd like. What would you say if I expressed some interest in fraternizing with the MCTC jazz band a little bit (even though I'm currently taking a semester off to focus on this venture as well as to support my mom, who just lost her job)? I would do my best not to completely drop off the edge of the world this time around. I do greatly apologize about that, by the way. There was a lot of madness going on in my life last year.

Thanks! Everything is going well here. I just got back from NYC performing for the 2nd time there with the burlesque troupe. I was also in the Diva fashion contest through school which consumed a lot of my time. I'm anxious to have more time to do music again. Anything new with you?

I wish I could have gone! I have seen a ton of great shows in the last 2 months: Booker T & The MGs with Eddie Floyd, Nick Lowe, Loretta Lynn, Bob Dylan (twice), Drive-By Truckers/Hold Steady (3x), Fred Eaglesmith, Hayes Carll, My Morning Jacket, but surprisingly I haven't been to a jazz show in a while. I will need to fix that!

Hi-Gregg "RockinRalf" here...in response to your question, I'm the instructor in the Media Production program...part of the infamous "Cinema Division". I don't teach music...well not performance anyway...but we look @ loop-scoring & MIDI in my Advanced Audio class, which will be starting this Spring.

You can recognize me by my gray-thinning hair & long ponytail!

I've also been heavily involved in the blues/jazz/rock scene since I moved to MN from SFCA in 1970. Our gig @ the Eagles Club with my quartet--Square Roots--was great...if "under-attended".

I'll slip ya a CD if you'd like!

PS-Didn't I see your name in a movie about Robert Johnson??

I wish I could have seen Ernestine Anderson but I have a final tomorrow and arrived back from SF yesterday. I took a little break from my five classes and everything else to go to SF for ten days but planned it so I only missed one class. I wish I could have planned it better so could have seen Ahmad Jamal and Ernestine Anderson but I had a nice time in CA seeing a show at the Fillmore and a musical in a old theater.

Techniques for learning a new piece of music

It occurs to me that this is a topic that is not often discussed. I offer some of the techniques taught in score study as possible suggestions and reccomendations. Most of us begin to learn a new piece by playing through it. I think learning a piece of music shoudl actually start with reading it as you would a book. Learn the form first.
Form: Are there repeats? Where are they located and what exactly do they repeat?
Is there a D.S.; D.C; Coda, etc. Is a D.S., where exactly is the sign. If an al… Continue

Institute Good Practice Techniques

There are many skills, techniques, strategies etc. that the music "gurus" will say if you try this you will be a great musician. Of course you all being bright, intelligent and mature know this is just not true. Becoming a great musician though is a lot about "living with" your instrument, whatever that instrument may be and about "living with" the repertoire, whatever that may be. You will find story after story found in autobiographies of musicians who play for hours. I really believe that "pl… Continue

Tips for Wind Players from a Vocalist

Although I play and have played several wind instruments, I am no expert, but there are some ways in which the voice, also a wind instrument can help you in your performance of other wind instruments.

1. Breathe not from your chest, but from much lower in your abdomen. Many people use the term diaphragm to identify this place. Think of it better as the expansion around the stomach, this would include the back.

2. Breathe in the beats leading up to the downbeat or pickup. Resist counting… Continue

Tips for String Players

Remember that the basic concept is that the string must vibrate in order to produce a pleasing tone. The wider the vibration and the faster the vibration, the more resonant your instrument will sound. Here are some ideas to practice the increase resonant playing.

1. Practice bowing in front of a mirror. Here you not only want to make sure that your bow is crossing the strings in the space between the bridge and your fingerboard, and that is make a straight line from tip to frog; you also want t… Continue
